Felege Hiywot Center and its programs were created to bring together local destitute children of inner city kids of Indianapolis and orphans of Ethiopia. We want to help facilitate and encourage kids to serve, lead, advocate, and engage others in helping the kids in their community and orphans of Ethiopia.

Mission

While FHC provides services based on the five founding principles of America’s Promise, (Caring Adults, Safe Places, Healthy Start, Marketable Skills, and Opportunity to serve), FHC seeks to engage youth 10-14 years old in the fundamentals of "Opportunity to serve" by providing tools and resources needed to achieve giving back to their community and the orphans of Ethiopia.

Our plan is to reach at least 15 young people, each year for 5 years. That is a minimum of 75 children assisted by FHC in 5 years. We will ensure that half of them will be children from the neighborhood. Our aim is to create a thriving mission where our efforts are linked with those of other community members. President’s Desk

I have been in the United States for 31 years and have enjoyed the freedom and the opportunities as a citizen since 1981. I desire to give back to my Hoosier community as well as to the homeland of my birthplace, Ethiopia.

My motivation of starting a mission began in 1975 following my move from Franklin College to IUPUI when I began living at 25th and Martindale. At that time, I realized there were many kids who could use my help and I started tutoring them after school. While working with these children, I realized an impression was being made on them as they learned about the living conditions of children in my homeland, Ethiopia. They started to understand how fortunate they were compared to Ethiopian children, even though compared to Indiana standards they may have considered themselves underprivileged.

It was while working with these neighborhood children that the idea of a mission connecting the poor orphans of Ethiopia to the needy children here in Indianapolis started.
